The Veterinary Pet Insurance Company is the largest and oldest pet health insurance company in the United States. It was founded in 1980 with one of its main purposes being to eliminate or reduce the economic euthanaisa of pets due to families not having sufficient funds to pay for much needed vetrinary costs.
VPI plans cover vet expenses for the treatment of your pet due to accident, illness, or various injuries. Dogs, cats, birds and exotic pets can be covered by a Veterinary Pet Insurance Policy.
You can also purchase what is called an Optional Pet Wellness Protection plan which covers routine veterinary care.
VPI is available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
I filled out a quick quote at http://www.petinsurance.com/enroll for my 9 year old female Chihuahua Minnie Me. The recommended Base Plan called the VPI Superior Plan costs $37.08 per month. Added on to that was the Wellness Core Coverage for $12.00. Added to those two figures is a Monthly Processing Fee of $2.00. Total balance due for this coverage comes to $51.08 per month. VPI states that they offer fast and efficient claims processing. If you purchase a plan there is a 10 day money back guarantee.
I think this $51.08 is pretty steep for pet health insurance - I have three cats and one dog! Of course you can opt not to purchase the Wellness Core Coverage and/or purchase a lesser plan.
VPI makes a point of pointing out that you can pick your own veterinarian.
